Vestige?
The word "vestige" as defined by Merriam Webster Online is:
"a trace, mark, or visible sign left by something (as an ancient city or a condition or practice) vanished or lost."
Theatre is, by its nature, ephemeral, temporary, an event experienced and left when the house lights go up. But it doesn't have to be. We want there to be something that follows an audience home after the final bows. A memory, an emotion, or something learned. Something the audience will remember after they go home, for days, weeks, or even the rest of their lives. A Vestige.
Mission Statement
The vestige group is for audience members who don't normally go to the theatre, but then they do and they find something in it that moves them, and they are changed.
The vestige group is for performers. Acting as a bridge and giving local artists opportunities to get an initial foot up in the Austin theatre community. The vestige group is about new playwrights, exploring new works, taking risks on the unknown and creating new pieces ourselves. Theatre is a continually changing art. The vestige group is on the forefront of producing new work, working in both mainstream theatres and found alternative spaces. The vestige group is about stepping outside of the box, being controversial, getting people talking, responding, being moved by the performance.
In an age of over stimulation, where people find it easier to plug into a TV instead of leave the house, the vestige group makes it a goal to push theatre back into the mainstream, making it just as desirable for the everyday person to pop into a play rather then see a movie.
The vestige group is about bare bones, low budget, do it yourself, all together theatre.
